OK, I've installed a few patches for thumbs.el that fix suboptimal
code in my previous change (mostly, situations where a
non-slash-finished directory could be accidentally concatenated to a
file name).
I'll stop now modifying thumbs.el till a decision is reached about
tumme.el. Unimplemented so far: removing the thumbsdir cleanup from
the top level, and the customization of the thumb dir so it could be
along the image directories.
