Huh?  Incompatible with what?

transient-mark-mode is used by pretty much everyone I've ever seen use Emacs.

It reminds me of the CL issue: almost all the .emacs I've seen end up
loading CL eagerly or lazily (rarely explicitly, of course, but indirectly
via loading some file from some external package they've installed in their
home dir).
