When you are using CVS versions, it helps considerably if you tell us details about which branch you are using, rather than relying on version numbers. I suspect you are using emacs-unicode-2, in which case the change of internal coding from emacs-mule to unicode would explain why you can't just reuse integer values to refer to the same characters.
