I like that. Threading based on In-Reply-To and Reference, displayed either as trees or flat, with 'fuzzy' Subject-based threading as well if you want it.

One obvious problem with Subject-based threading that I don't think was mentioned before was the threading of messages that *aren't* in the same thread. I get it a lot in Gmail and mutt (with strict threading off) from emails from friends and stuff where the Subject line might be something like "Hey".

One more opinion. I know I've said I like the tree display. I do agree with whoever said it that it is overkill in simple conversations (not that I find it causes any problems). In an 8 message exchange between me and a couple of my friends, you are correct. However I find it invaluable in email lists, where threads often diverge into separate sub-conversations. Which is why I used the 'On GUI' thread as an example.

Part of that thinking is the fact that I read a lot of email lists, which I'm not sure if everyone on this lists does.
