Glad that Tom resolved his problem, but just for the sake of info, I do 
not have "use internet preferences" checked, and in the situation I 
described, changing from userID to [EMAIL PROTECTED] in the PPP control 
panel did in fact do the trick.

Glad to finally understand, however, the logic of the % symbol I've seen 
mentioned here various times.
