Have you tried a "typical rebuild"? Launch CE with the option key or the command & option keys down, and it will ask if you want to try a rebuild.
If that doesn't work, then you can progress to the other choice; a more in depth rebuild, which sometimes untrashes a lot of stuff that you wanted to stay trashed. But try the easy one first. And I suppose you ought to have a dup of the mail files, just in case something goes farther amiss.
