As far as I recall, you can first trigger the dialup in OS X, and once 
the modem is open, Emailer in Classic can use the open connection to your 
ISP/other mail, but Emailer won't do the dialing up. I can go check 
through my list archives, but I believe that's the way that others have 
said it needs to be done - connect under OS X first, and then switch to 
Classic and send/receive the email with Emailer. I do think AOL is 
handled differently (like a lot of AOL things...).
