I have been watching the on-going debate with much interest in both the
discussion itself and the people discussing it.
First of all, I would like to reiterate what someone somewhere down the
line said (if I may paraphrase) that basically whatever you are
comfortable with and whatever works the best for you is what you should
use. As much of a Mac Evangelist/Addict as I am, there are some people
that I will not talk out of using a Windoze box simply because in their
world, it makes more sense. (No, I am NOT initiating that war, nor will I
make any further statements on that issue.) The point being is that one
pair of shoes does not fit everyone. We all need to walk in our own shoe
at our own pace.
That said, I would like to comment on OS X, specifically Jaguar. I played
with OS X since beta (yes, I still can't believe I PAID to beta test
software, isn't it supposed to be the other way around??) While there
were a host of problems both in the beta and the first final release,
MANY of those issues have been dealt with very nicely in Jaguar. Jaguar,
upon first release had some MAJOR fatal flaws, but you know what? The
update that came out has seemed to fix all the issues I had. The major
issues I had was a total freeze up of the system in which I could boot
off any system disk (including Jaguar and OS 9.0, 9.1) except when I
finally found my OS 9.2 disk -- THAT one worked! The other real pain in
the neck problem was that my preferences were randomly disappearing
(Where is the dock this time? What items are even in there, What image is
on the desktop? Etc.) including the almost all loss of my Mail
preferences. I would put in all my settings, quit the app, restart it and
it would look like I had never used the application, except for my Mac
account which was active.
Very weird, very buggy. They are all gone now! I now am running Jaguar on
two systems and am really enjoying the experience. I think the main thing
it boils down to is which applications are you using and are they native
and can you afford to upgrade to them? These are the questions you need
to ask.
As far as whether or not Jaguar breaks GUI codes or not, I really only
have one thing to say on that...Didn't we all become Mac users because
Macs broke the "rules" of what already existed and provided us with a
system that was way ahead of all the rest? I see Jaguar as a natural
progression forward and either you go or you don't. Much the same as when
the PowerMac chip was released. Based on what your workflow was, either
you upgraded or you didn't. You just need to be aware of what your
personal needs are and the costs of either option (yes, there are cost of
staying on the island when everyone is getting on the rescue ship).
Whew...I just had to throw in my $5.32 for what it is worth...
