Thanks to all who responded to my woes. The suggestion to do a clean reinstall of QuickTime got rid of the annoying update reminders which were appearing every time I booted, even though I had disabled the "automatic update."
I downloaded the "standalone" version of the installer, reintalled, and that did the trick, no more nagging reminders.
