I bought a small apt build a few years ago. (3 units)
Did a bunch of work on it - in the process we came a across a *real*
wiring job!
The outlet (in the first floor apartment) was carrying 120v into a
standard 2 plug outlet.
The tenet had one plug used for a 3 way plug bed side lamp, and
radio/alarm clock. te other she left open to plug the vacuum into when
she vacuumed the room.
Turns out the wire carrying the 120v power to this outlet was:
22 gauge bell wire - the stuff you use for your door bell, or maybe a
telephone. The wire is small enough that you can almost break it by hand.
At times this wire HAD to be carrying more than 10 amps, and likely
15!!!!! (10->12 for the Vacuum + lamp, and radio). Why this wire did
not either fail (and disintegrate) or simply burst into flames - I have
NO idea -
from what we could tell this outlet was like this for over 10 years!!!
