I use a CD writer. It's a SCSI Ricoh MP7040S CD-R/RW supplied by a German company - Freecom perhaps? No doubt "unavailable" but I'm sure you can find a used one on Ebay. I also had a 2Gb SCSI external Hard Drive that was rather temperamental so I gave it away yesterday! I was using it as a temporary store for backups before committing to CD. Of course CDs are limited to little more than 0.5Gb but (provided you choose a decent make) they are fairly reliable. The ones my CD writer prefers are those made by TDK. Item code CD-RDV80GEA. I've used magneto-optical in the past, until the darn drive packed up. Back to CDs! Whatever volatile medium you use, it is likely to be just that: volatile. Sorry to sound negative. I just tell it like it is.
