A 2nd attempt works because on the 2nd try, OS X >is already connected to the internet, and it properly passes the data >back to Classic. > Am having the exact same problem starting 2 months ago, using Emailer on my old Powermac with OS 8.1. MY ISP said that Qwest upgraded their software around that time. "Not backward compatible with systems and TCP/IP's earlier than OS 9. This problem has been effecting Emailer, also Eudora". Since then, have resorted to 2x manually (keyboard) connecting in order to receive or send my email. It takes 2 tries to get a server supplied IP address connection (as seen in my open TCP/IP window) in order to retrieve and send my email. However, that IP address/connection disappears within 2 minutes if not actively polling for, or sending messages during that short time. Therefore, can't have Emailer auto polling for messages anymore, because the IP address/connection disappears within 2 minutes, and I get timed out log messages.
My work around to keep that IP address connection open, is running Netscape, or YA Newswatcher, while Emailer is still running. Same problem happens with Newswatcher, if I launch it before Emailer. Have to click stop, then click connect again for a 2nd try to get connected. The problem doesn't seem to effect Navigator, running by itself, or with Emailer in the background. I did not fully understand what this frustrating problem was all about, until I saw Chris's reply explanation above posted to the list digest I received today. The problem is not only effecting Classic, but earlier operating systems than that. The problem is not with Emailer, nor getting a dial up connection. Aside from buying a new computer, there's nothing much I can do to resolve the problem at this time, but I want to thank Chris for the posted info...makes the problem a little bit less frustrating.
