One folder (filed mail - within CE) had dates askew - in no logical/chronological order.
All the other folders were fine - messages stored in proper chronological order. Did BOTH kinds of rebuilds - no difference. Moved all the messages into another folder - all now fine! The messges are now properly sorted (chronologically) in the new folder. Not sure why it worked - but it did. Now, it remains to be seen if new messages placed in that folder retain their chronological place. We'll see. HTH.
