Tannis, thank you. Don't be so quick to think your solution my be too 
simple. It may be exactly right. Since I've already moved all the 
messages to a new folder, I can't really tell - but trying to replicate 
the problem (by clicking one of the non-date column headings) *seems* to 
be doing to the messages what I thought was the problem. I can't be sure.

It may be that moving all of the messages to a new folder activated the 
default column heading (Date) and that "solved" the problem.
