Greetings
I've found four options for sending to a large list. Let's assume 500
names. For my use I use option (1), though I'll have to try something
new soon enough. My largest list is 1,158 names.

        (1) Emailer or Mail. As discussed elsewhere, because of ISP limits
you have to break up the addresses into several identical emails. My
ISP limit is 200, so 500 addresses becomes three emails. Managing the
addresses within one group is limited to 1,000 in Emailer and 250
addresses for one email.
The advantage is for an actively managed list (meaning the operator is
updating the address book with each mailing) it is easy because the
address updates/deletes are inside the email program. The disadvantage
is the overhead to break the email into several. I have a way to do
this if anyone is interested.
        (2) Web based elists. I have reading knowledge only, nothing
practical. They are like this list (subscribe, unsubscribe). They are
not limited in numbers of addresses. However, they are not practical
for membership lists (like mine) because only a few will accept
addresses on other than a subscribe/unsubscribe basis and then address
management becomes a burden. My lists are membership lists. We sell a
membership (wrestling) and get pmial, email and vmail addresses.
(postal mail, email and phone)
        (3) Bulk Mail programs. Letterrip is the one I've tried, but I never
got it working (I was dial up, then, and do not control a server).
Letterrip is an effort of Jud, one of the authors of Emailer. I've
stayed on that elist and users are people like churches and schools and
they like it and Jud is very responsive. I just got a demo of another
I will try and report back about. It is supposed to work on my laptop
through my dial up or broad band.
        (4) Server based. Full featured web hosting servers offer elist and
other mass email options. I've not tried any.

The solutions are better on the Mac than non-Macs because Letterrip is
Mac only and consistently noted superior to non-Mac solutions for those
who control servers.
The single biggest decision is how actively you plan to manage your
address lists. If you are adding, deleting, updating daily (as me),
then managing the list will be more time than writing and sending the
email.
If you have a static list that changes little, then Web based may work.
