Its a feature of Drag and Drop. Not all applications support it. I don't 
have Word 6 installed to try it, but it does work in Word 98.

Its very possible that Word 6 doesn't support it, nor InDesign or 
Freehand. In fact, I'd be surprised if Freehand did it, as that is more 
of a graphics program, so it will have more limited text processing 
abilities. And WordPerfect is probably too old to support it (Drag and 
Drop was added in System 7.?? and didn't roll fully into the OS until OS 
8, so many things didn't support it until OS 8, and I think WordPerfect's 
last version is older then that).

I am a little surprised that InDesign wouldn't support drag and drop 
editing. That's a newer application for Desktop Publishing (right?). I 
would think it would be new enough to have been common when it was 
written, and I would think since it already would have a form of drag 
editing, that drag and drop cut/paste would have been a no brainer.
