One of the nice things about Claris Emailer is that it DOES NOT
automatically read HTML attachments. If the HTML message has a tracking
pixel, a Trojan, or a Java virus-applet in it, you're not going to be
automatically exposed to it.

Of course, if you want to take a chance, then just drag the HTML attachment
onto the icon of your web browser, e.g., Internet Explorer or Netscape.
That will open the HTML message. Or, use your browser to do File -> Open to
open the attached HTML document.

Word is opening the HTML message because it can parse and display some HTML.
But your version of Word obviously can't use the HTML links to pull the
images in from the Net. MS Word in my Windows machine can do that, but I'm
not sure if Word on a Mac can (and/or what version of Word Mac you would
need). But why bother to use Word? Use your browser... and expect to see
some crappy pages offering you enhanced manhood.

You could also use Outlook Express, or another modern email client, to read
these messages. OE displays HTML, and pulls linked files from the Web to
display the complete message.
