Gandhi, Gladstone, Mandela, Wellington, Churchill, de Gaulle, Brandt? I don't know too much about US presidents but had assumed honesty on the part of Washington and Lincoln at the very least. All of the above had an agenda in the sense of sincerely held political beliefs but I am not aware of any cheating or stealing on their part. Whilst it must be right to exercise skepticism it would be a pity for the sake of our democracies if cynicism became total. I have certainly met people in politics who I felt were decent and honest, although I would not argue with Melbourne's assertion that power tends to corrupt.
