I think they are justified in telling a sender, "The attached file you 
sent my user contains a virus." This can be a service to the sender. 
Otherwise useful and "real" attached files may well be contaminated by 
secretly inserted malicious code that the sender isn't aware of. Where 
the protection programs are annoying, I agree, is when their notification 
to a supposed sender has been triggered by a worm - a file whose only 
purpose and existence is to make trouble and which may be wantonly 
hijacking address books.
