Sounds like you are getting a lot of spam. I got tired of dealing with 
this and acquired a paid copy of PostArmor, which does a v. good job of 
recognizing junk on the server and deleting it automagically.

I was reminded of how irritating this was when we were away from home 
over the 4th -- this G4 shut down and disconnected from the phone line -- 
and I was using our "travelling" clamshell iBook. Checked in over a 
dialup connection and had to wait while 228 messages downloaded, only to 
delete 222 of them. I now have PostArmor installed and running on the 
iBook too!
