Greetings
I chose the reliability of ADSL instead of the hype of Cable.
I, too, went through the exasperating process of deciding through all the spin.
I would like it if all ISP's provided reliability scores for their service.

--------------------Details--------------
Cable has several artificial caps, according to my talks with Adelphia (only cable where I live). This is from Dec/Jan when I was researching Cable (Adelphia) v ADSL (Alltel).
Cable limits email addresses per email to 75 and total email in a period of time (one hour and 24 hours).
ADSL allows 200 addresses and no limits beyond.

Cable speed would fluctuate with demand. This was management of the system, not overload. Late at night Adelphia tried for top speeds. In the afternoon they cranked it down to spread the load. During the day they reserved part for business customers.
ADSL is steady

Cable outages run about one every three weeks for four hours or more.
ADSL's have been much less. I've not felt the need to ask for credit.
(Note: There are at least two types of outages. One is the connection. The other the mail server. It is possible to have the connection buy have the mail server down.

Cable was poor to answer test technical calls to their support lines and did not know some answers.
ADSL support calls have been promptly answered and their answers good.

Cable could hook you up in a couple of days.
ADSL took 7 days, though they said they'ed take 10, with most of that me waiting for a ADSL modem to arrive.

Cable is straightforward. If there is availability, plug in.
ADSL takes some art. If you have two phone lines within one phone cord, there might be a problem. (In my case my chosen line( xxx -5754) was within the same cord as another (xxx-1772). I decided to use xxx-9263 because it was the only number within that cord. I was planing to drop 9263 with Broadband, but did not.) ADSL requires filters (they provide them) on each phone on the line you are using.

Cable presumes you never go on vacation and their signal is never down. They provide no other way to get to the internet.
ADSL provides 60 hours @ month of included dial up where they have numbers. (I wish they had 800 service for email.)
Note: With either one you need a dial up ISP for when you travel or service is down.
<If you're still with me, I'm using surfbest to respond to this because I've not changed my list subscription to Alltel. I can use surfbest when on the road where Alltel has no service.>

Cable hooks you one month, drops you the next, as you wish. There is not contract.
ADSL wants one or two year contracts.
