ADSL needs to be within 15,000 feet of wire of a "CO", according to Alltel and other sources.
Further, the quality of the line coming into the house does matter, though I do not know the variance.
(My brother has two lines. One is ok for ADSL, one is not. The older line (18 years) is ok. The newer (6) not. I do not know if they come from the same CO.
