I really appreciate getting so many suggestions and so much help. As an interim solution, I just shortened file names to things like Bill54.jpg or Phil47.jpg and that seems to work. Since I am not yet capable of authoring a site so that visitors can naviagate it on there own, each photo exists in isolation, and if I'm sending the url to someone, I can also provide a description. As far as I know, all these work.
