My ISP, like many others, offers access to iPass global roaming. This
provides a dialler and a database of local access numbers for just about
anywhere in the world at local rates plus a charge of a few
dollars/pounds/euros an hour. Significantly cheaper than using cellular
networks, hotel internet or chargeable WiFi hotspots. I have rarely been
unable to collect my emaileven when travelling in undeveloped countries.

For those whose ISPs do not offer iPass (and one often has to ask loudly)
a company called Net2Roam provides a comparable service. Unlike iPass
charges which are billed by your ISP, Net2Roam units are purchased in
advance but appear somewhat cheaper. www.net2roam
Various other global networks like Infonet and IBM offer local access
points but tend to be Mac hostile and only interested in corporate
business. I am told that the most universally accessible networks with
good bandwidth are operated by the intelligence agencies. Although not,
alas, for the likes of us. News organisationsseem to be quite ill
provided by comparison.
