The first thing I noticed was that there is no "APOP" feature for password authentication/encryption (I can't recall which it is... I just know I use it). I suppose I could turn it off at my server, but I'm not sure I want to.
You'll be delighted to hear that Thunderbird does support APOP. If you select "Use secure authentication" from Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Settings then APOP will be used for POP3 connections if your server supports/requires it.
As you're a network admin, you might want to consider enabling SSL connections to your server for SMTP, POP and IMAP (Thunderbird supports SSL too :-)
