I have no idea why you would try smtp.localhost... but I'm sure you had your reasons. Since you are trying to do this with OS X, use 127.0.0.1 as the SMTP server name instead of localhost (or in your case, where you used smtp.localhost). For some really strange reason, OS X doesn't like to work with the locahost term despite the fact that is should be setup for it and it is more or less a *nix standard to accept it.
