First off, it's working fine.
I had trouble until I cleaned out all copies, everything. 
But no, I wasnt' 'trying' to run two copies. I had hid the other emailer 
several folders away, and it still found it.  Even when in the trash... 
and that's not the case with 7.5.
It *didn't* fail clicking on your SMTP Auth version and the other version 
somewhere in the hard disk. I simply gave me that:
"Claris Emailer Preferences file is either damaged or open in..."
and produced another pref file. But it ran fine, popping up this note.
and it gave me that 'blank' look when trashing the pref file your SMTP 
Auth produced.
so trial and error...  trial and error...  it's fine now.
