ISPs, when they can't quickly answer a question, they look for ways to
get rid of the question. Every Emailer user hears that line: "We don't
support Emailer." Their SMTP servers can be down, so that you can't send
your outgoing mail, and you can call them to find out why you can't send
mail. If you're the first person to reach that particular "customer
service" technician to announce that you can't send mail, it will be
easier for him to refuse to help you, as if it is an Emailer-only
problem, rather than determine that the SMTP servers are down. On his
NEXT call, from an Outlook user, he'll do his job and report that the
servers are down.

If I know that there's a chance that the technician will go for the "We
don't support that application" bailout, I simply say that I'm using a
DIFFERENT application. "I'm sorry, we don't support Emailer." My
response: "Oh, but this happens when I use Mail too." His response:
"Please hold while I investigate this." If you are reasonably certain
that the problem is not just an Emailer issue, you're better off naming a
supported application rather than Emailer. I see that Comcast supports
only two Mac email clients, Mail and Entourage. THERE is your key for
tech support when the problem is on their end and not yours.
