I still can't get emailer to work for the last several months. it
keeps reporting a connection failure. ISP is AOL. Anything I'm
doing wrong?

No, rather that I fear that there is something terribly wrong with
the world... and I am worried that the Designer is hovering over the
rewind and erase buttons, our continued existence due only to His
uncertainty as to which to use.
