Got this response from Mike today - seems he's been working on the
problem. Kinda interesting in that he's an engineer and knows his way
around a computer.
The stories that he's told about some of the things that he's rigged up over
the years are wild!

Thanks for the feedback-- As it happens, I am using
both Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Thunderbird. Primarily
because the Microsoft products are so riddled with security
problems. The Mozilla products are not security perfect, but
they are orders of magnitude safer than the Microsoft stuff.
I do like both these software packages, except for the couple
of little problems I am having.
My problems stem from a few picky pesky problems that
I have not been able to solve and the Mozilla FAQs do not
address it. I tried to register with the Mozilla forums to get help,
but something got messed up and it will not let me register
but instead says that someone with my e-mail address is
already registered. Well, DUH.... it was me trying to
register. Changing my password was no help. It seems to
think I am an impostor!!
I guess I will have to sign up with another mail host in order
to get a different e-mail address so I can log into the forums!
