Packit is long since dead. It was a compression tool available before Stuffit existed. Stuffit pretty much wiped it out of existance. Same with a number of others that were around at one time (CompactIt and Disk Doubler come to mind). Allume is the current parent company of Stuffit. It was owned by Raymond Lau (the original developer), then it was sold to Aladdin Systems (or Aladdin formed to take over Stuffit in the commercial market, not sure). And it was more recently sold to Allume. Allume seems to be paying attention to the PC market, which will spell the end of Stuffit. As for what I use, I still use Stuffit, only because it is there on my computer, and it is easily backward compatible with earlier OS versions. OS 10.4 no longer comes with Stuffit, instead Apple has made Zip the default compression and expects people to use it. So I expect in the next year or so, Zip will become MUCH more popular on the Mac. Seeing as it is already the standard on Windows, and WinXP includes built in support for the Zip format, I suspect Zip is not too far off from being "the" compression format for computers in general (GZip is already used on *nix, Zip on Windows, and now Zip is the default on new Macs, with no preloaded option for Sit at all anymore). -chris <http://www.mythtech.net> ___________________________________________________________________________ To unsubscribe send a mail message with a SUBJECT line of "unsubscribe" to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> or <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
