OK, I must have already installed it at that point.
Reviewing my error logs it appears this is the
response I got when trying to send before installing
the hack version:
--* Couldn’t complete the last command because the
connection timed out.--
And then after installing the hack, at one point
(sorry I am not more clear on the specific
circumstance) I got this error:
--Connecting to Internet using Account “entel”
   Sending mail using “smtp.sbcglobal.net”
** Could not resolve the domain name
“smtp.sbcglobal.net” because no
   data was available for reading.

   Checking email account
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
** Could not resolve the domain name
“pop.entelchile.net” because no
   data was available for reading.--

And by the way, I have a different SMTP because I am
traveling and connecting to the net usually through a
different dialup account than at home in Chile.

I am sure the Entel email server does nothing that
would be useful. In fact I am subscribed now to the
List/Digest through a Yahoo email account because the
List rejects the Entel server which has no protections
and has thus become an international spammers
paradise.

Their server does seem to go offline now and again.
In any case, I no longer to have access to the
broadband connection I was experimenting with, as I
have travelled on again, but plan to soon have a
different access, thus DO want to resolve this.
During the problem I did try connecting to a random
website successfully as you suggest.

So in conclusion, assuming the potential servers I
have access to are not using SMTP authorization, and
that the one I am using is online, how can I resolve
this? For example, should I be using the SMTP hack
version of Emailer, or Baton Mail? Is there
potentially no solution if the mail server is of a
certain type (? I'm limited in my technical
understanding)?

Thanx again,
Gabriel
