Hi Chris:

I¹ve learned a lot from your postings over the years regarding Emailer,
and heard about other supposedly good web browsers for OS 9x, but need to
offer my 2 cents worth in favor of iCab. Perhaps some of the following
could be helpful to you, and others interested:

One good thing about iCab is that you can go into it's preferences, and
change it's identity/proxies to the other ones listed there, or select
"Other" check box and type in your own. Mine is typed as: Mozilla/4.76
(compatible; MSIE 6.0; iCab 5.0; Mac_PowerPC)
and rarely have incompatible recognition problems you mention above.
Neither Mozilla 4.7.6, nor MISIE 6.0 can run on my computer. iCab 5.0
doesn't even exist, but they get recognized as such at most web sites I
visit. Can't say why, just that it works. If this helps further...I only
have the use standard proxies settings check box selected there.

I played with check boxes of the others listed there with mixed results.
I've been to web sites that didn't recognize iCab, or the listed others
as defaults. However, while unrecognized at some sites, I typed in my own
identity/proxies above, selected reload, and was immediately recognized
and let in. After resorted to this a few times, I decided stay with my
own identity proxies. Have gotten back into web sites like Travelocity
and others, that no longer recognized my former Netscape browser, or iCab
via this way.

Perhaps the following could also be helpful:
In iCab's preferences, under JavaScript Identity/Settings, I selected
MSIE and typed in version 6.0. For iCab (though not selected) I typed in
version 5.0. For Netscape (also not selected) I left that at the default
version 4.79.

I also occasionally get that JavaScript in indefinite loop window that
pops up. It gives you a choice (don't remember the exact wording) to
cancel, or click OK. I always click Ok, and that stops the loop and the
page that was blocked by it continues loading. Sure it takes a little
time for that indefinite loop window to appear, probably because am on
dialup, but getting to click OK always seems to resolve that loop
problem(s) at the time.

Am a registered iCab user. The iCab 3 betas are improvements over what I
have, are compatible with OS 9x and OS X, but not backwards compatible
with OS 8.1. Am quite satisfied with iCab 2.9.8 on my "old" Powermac
7100/80, with OS 8.1 for now, but will be considering purchasing a
MacIntel in the not too distant future, and upgrade to the hopefully
final non-beta iCab 3x release.

Hmm...You didn't mention Safari. Isn't it OS 9x compatible?

Best regards,
Martin Zibulsky
