I am having some annoying Classic crashes on Tiger (10.4.6). On a 12"
PowerBook G4 (DVI) with 768 MB RAM. Emailer is the only application
running in Classic and if Classic crashes new unsaved emails are lost
:-(.

I don't think I had the same problems when running 10.3.9. I think they
may all be related to the fact that I am running a PowerBook and doing
typical portable activities.

1. About 20% of the time, when I drag a mail to another folder to file
it, the Classic environment crashes. As this is only intermittent I
haven't really identified the true cause. I had recently installed a
*new* 3rd party extension in my OS 9 System folder, USB OverDrive, which
enables the scroll wheel in Classic on my Logitech Bluetooth mouse. But I
don't see the same problem when running 10.3.9.

2. I often work with 2 monitors, with the menu bar and Emailer on my
larger, higher resolution display (1280 x 1024). When I switch to single
monitor mode (1024 x 768), either by sleeping then removing the external
monitor cable or by mirroring displays by using the F7 key, the Classic
Environment crashes.

3. Classic may also crash when I switch from wireless to wired printing
or vice versa. I am using AppleTalk to a couple of Apple LaserWriters via
an Dayna Mini EtherPrint bridge box and a Netgear MR314 wireless router.
This is not such a big deal now, as I have finally realised that I never
need to switch from wireless networking. And one less cable to plug in is
always a plus point :-)

I hope that I'm not being unrealistic in expecting the Classic
environment to run more than an entire day without crashing. I'm pretty
sure that OS 9.2.2 was rock solid on my previous G3 PowerBook. I'm
experimenting by running 10.3.9 for a few days to see if the problems
also exist there. I have my drive divided into 2 partitions to allow me
to work and test on 2 different versions of Mac OS.

Is anyone else having similar problems? Any solutions/suggestions?

TIA
Mike
