In addition to Chris' sound advice, you should create another user
account (and don't add any third party software to the login list), log
into that account and see if the problems persist. If so, you likely have
some system level issues which means reinstalling OS X; if not, you
likely have a third-party software problem. Have you added anything to
your login items. You can find a list at System
Preferences>Accounts>Login Items.

You may also try running Console under your troublesome account; when/if
X freezes again, Console should give you an idea of what caused it.

BTW, is the Mac freezing, i.e. the computer is not responding to
keyboard/mouse input; are you getting the spinning beach ball; or are you
getting a kernal panic. If it one of the first two, try force quitting
the application that has hung. If you Mac operate normally after quitting
the bad application, then you know you have a bad app! If it the third,
you likely have some USB issue. What do you have connected to your USB
ports?

And to echo Chris once again, spyware for OS X is technically possible,
but there no reported, verifiable instance of it.

And spam is inveitable unless you have a closely guarded email account.
For example I've given my gmail account to only one person, but I get one
or two pieces of spam a week. OTOH, I've given my .mac address to only a
few family members, but can't recall receiving *any* spam on that
account. That may be due to Apple's filters.

Good luck.
