OT, yes, but driving me crazy (Mary Lou also, evidently). Catchup: the trouble is wireless which has worked for a long time, now working at just a very few hot spots, but not working at most - even though a strong signal is indicated - no connection. Nothing has been changed on my computer since it was working everywhere.
It's not working at home where I share a router with a neighbor who is virtually never there (with his permission). It was working when he last left, and he has not been back to change anything. He leaves it on all the time. Even if he had been here, he doesn't know enough about it to change anything. I went to six open hot spots where I could previously connect, got a fast connection at one and no connection at five. I followed Chris' kind advice and went to the Sustainable Softworks site, http://www.sustworks.com. I downloaded IPNet Tuner and all the other stuff that they have there on 21-day trial. I tried all I could (from my standpoint as low-power-user) at home where the numbers on the neighbor's router are: IP Address 192.168.1.116 Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0 Router Address 192.168.1.1 Name Server Address 192.168.1.1 As one astute observer commented, these are probably default numbers and probably correct as my neighbor would have known nothing past taking the router out of the box and turning it on. Anyway, I used IPNet Tuner's "Ping" utility to ping the router. The results were perfect. The utility makes 10 tries, and all 10 came back in .01 second (or .001, I don't remember). Fast. >From here I am able to do no more than kick the can down the road a little by reporting results, but not being able to interpret them. I went to IPNet Monitor, and did the Link Rate Test twice. First time before using the auto-configure mode of IPNet Monitor, and second after using auto-configure. I'm sending .jpg's of the resulting graphs offlist to Chris and bwms to see if it means anything. If anyone else on the list wants to give it a try, please email me offlist as I don't want to send attachments to the list. Then I tried the TCP Rate Test, but it came up blank. Must have been because I could not connect to any web page for the test. So here the can is kicked down the road a little, and maybe some kind list resident can come up with something, or give me a clue to kick the can further down the road.
