For everyone's information: John Baltutis, on the Mac-L list recommended I use the instructions at:
<http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/resetlaunchservices.html> and they eventually worked. I had to do it twice, trashing my launch services plist (Instructions "B") as well as its caches (Instructions "A") , use RCDefaultApp to set prefs and reboot twice. The first time I simply followed Instructions "A", Colorsync Utility suddenly became the default app to open .jfif files and behaved as RealPlayer had previously! Hope this info helps someone on this list in the future.
