euh.. Vocabulary assistance required..

a thumb drive, is that a USB stick ?

If so.. there are generic drivers that allow the Mac to recognize several 
USB devices to be recognized.
I have an Apple storage driver for Mac OS 9, but there will be others too.

The more stupid the device is, the better chances of recognition.

E.g.  I remember how IOMEGA managed to make SCSI stuff that sometimes was 
not visible because they made it too difficult.
