That is the way it has worked since as long as I can remember... at
least back into the System 5 days, if not earlier (possibly always
been that way, I can't honestly remember if my 128 running System
0.97 even had a Select All ability).
This works not just in Emailer, but in the Finder as well, and in any
other application that properly followed Apple's HIG.
