I thought gmail required an SSL connection which CE can not do. If that is the case, then nothing you are going to do will get CE to talk to gmail.
Mail can do SSL. Set up the account, then go to the Advanced tab for the account and check the box to use SSL (it may let you check the SSL option when setting up the account using Apple's account setup assistant).
