I got it & it works fine on the same machine that crashes viewing the .png file directly in Firefox. This pdf has been made simply by encapsulating the existing .png file. I'm guessing that Adobe Reader is just better at using only the RAM it needs to display what is actually on-screen. I think I'm going to render the graphs as postscript, then convert them with ps2pdf or something similar to see if that works even better. Thanks Barb!
