Hello, it seems that Ubuntu studio uses the -rt flavour (low latency kernel). That is not quite hard realtime as we need for emc2, but at some point in the future it might be good enough to drive servo controlled machines. I doubt they will meet the time requirements to output step pulses from a parport (that kind of latency: under 20usec is not something really needed for regular work, even if high demand like Audio/Video processing). Jeff Epler investigated the -rt kernel during Gutsy (http://axis.unpy.net/01190912545), I doubt anything majour has changed until hardy.
