A short time after I installed the 8.04 from the live CD the package manager wanted me to upgrade to 8.10... I knew better, but to avoid being annoyed again I did a little poking around and in the synaptic package manager settings/preferences general tab I changed the system upgrade from smart upgrade to always ask (I think that is what I did). Anyhow it never bothered me again with wanting to upgrade to 8.10. Dunno if this is possible to do before 2.3 so the spm will not try and upgrade to 8.10 etc... would keep a bunch of newbee's from making that fatal mistake.
