No, it works open-loop and runs through a sequence of (still
sinusoidal) phase angle positions that is hopefully guaranteed to
pick-up and centre the rotor.

Possibly, but there would need to be a homing passthrough built in to
EMC2, so that the "homing request" pin would go high, triggering an
orient, and then the "aligned" pin in the comp would go high to finish
the process.
A large disadvantage of this would be that you couldn't jog until homed.
