I'd amend that to say BLDC are just that, run from unmodulated DC like the fans in your computer (no PWM just field coils switched by the Hall devices) BLDC really applies more to the drive method the the motor (a "BLDC" fan motor will run just fine with sine wave drive) All the motors here are really AC synchronous motors (but with PM rotor exitation) Many AC servo motors have incremental encoders _and_ Hall effect devices (or Hall signals from the encoder) This allows an incremental encoder to act like an absolute encoder with +- 30 degrees startup uncertainty which is OK to get the motor running.
