I've had this happen on my old Norton 850 Interstate, but the stater/rotor are not in an oil bath. Still messy and an expensive pain (at least living in Albuquerque at the time). I really wish I could find the web site on the guy that hand wound his own stepper motors on wooden rotors/stators, but cannot find it at the moment.
