 I've had this happen on my old Norton 850 Interstate, but the 
 stater/rotor are not in an oil bath.  Still messy and an expensive pain 
 (at least living in Albuquerque at the time).

 I really wish I could find the web site on the guy that hand wound his 
 own stepper motors on wooden rotors/stators, but cannot find it at the
