One advantage of the Arduino as an EMC2 I/O expander is that a lot of
work has already been done.

Actually, I suppose the Arduino could do the whole app. alone. I think
it has a simplified programing language that tries to bring
micro-controllers to nontechnical types, but I really haven't looked
into it.
