Here is [1] small program which may be used to display error messages using
Desktop
Notification protocol [2].
First some clarifications. Desktop Notifications are not specific to any desktop
environment like gnome, they are happily working in strange tiling WM's like dwm
or ion3. If WM don't implement notification protocol notification-daemon
provides WM-agnostic way to display them (however in default installation of
linuxcnc's ubuntu 10.04 notify-osd used for notifications which is nearly
broken).
Unlike touchy's statusbar way to display messages this program stores acquired
messages in buffer and displays first 10 (with notice that there are some more).
Also popup bubbles are not easy to ignore :) [3]. However they are not focus
stealing so they don't interfere with normal operations.
Question is if it's good idea to inclide it into emc2 tree or let it live out of
tree? In later case i'll provide packages in my mirror.

All of the data generated in your IT infrastructure is seriously valuable.
Why? It contains a definitive record of application performance, security
threats, fraudulent activity, and more. Splunk takes this data and makes
sense of it. IT sense. And common sense.
