While working on gscreen I got back to this.
As you noted the wizards at Ubuntu screwed with the notify_osd package
and makes it hard to use effectively.
you can't set an arbitrary time limit and the default is about 10 seconds.
There is a way to set the limit to about three but then you can't get it to
merge new errors with the window so you end up missing some messages.
But man it's looks so nice and integrates with the desktop so well...
I searched the net and found a patched PPA package that allowed the time
limits and merged messages.
After that, it works and looks really professional.
If anyone is interested I will find the web site of the package and post a pic
on the wiki.
