Do you think the problem is SMP vs single-core or is it the kernel delivered with Ubuntu 8.04 vs. the kernel delivered with Ubuntu 10.04? I'm frankly confused by most of the forum/email traffic that is very stream-of-consciousness in nature and frequently lacks even basic forensic information. From my standpoint 1) these problems seem most prevalent among users with antique (in internet years) computers. 2) these problems seem related more to bioses than to cpus. 3) these problems seem related more to technology shifts in successive versions of the underlying kernel/distribution than in emc2 itself. Suggestions: 1) make sure users test their computers with the stock Ubuntu 10.04, or whatever base distribution is relevant, before going for the latest emc2. 2) in the same vein as the latency-test script, develop a utility script that checks for desiderata, and possibly even serves as a go/no-go test. 3) be more specific about the cpus and/or hardware configurations that are known to be poor candidates for emc2, e.g., get people to add their problem systems to the spreadsheet. I'm especially dubious, for example, of low-end VIA-based systems which seem to pop up from time to time. As an aside, I think the emc community has done itself a disservice by promoting (at least in the beginning) and tolerating the notion that emc works on just any old box. The Hardware Requirements section of the Wiki has been aging in place (mea culpa---I haven't added anything in several years either, and the stuff I added about RTAI and large memory is out of date).
